First off I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Monroe and Jackson families and friends over the needless loss of their loved ones, Jeffrey and Edwin.
My writing was motivated by an immigration activist whose name I cannot now remember but well remember her stating that these deaths were not about illegal immigration but rather about alcohol.
This narrative obviously serves this immigration activist’s desired narrative, cause. I believe this narrative looks through too narrow a lens and allows far too many people to not look in the mirror and own their role in this tragedy.
I believe we must look through a much more expansive lens and ask ourselves what must have been true in order for Mr. Orrego-Savala to allegedly drive his automobile into Mr. Monroe and Jackson, killing them both.
Mr. Orrego-Savala must be present in USA.
Mr. Orrego-Savala must be intoxicated.
Mr. Orrego-Savala must be driving an automobile under the influence of alcohol, and without a valid driving license, his having been revoked.
An overwhelmingly large percentage of legal immigrants are not criminals, just like the rest of US citizens all.
An overwhelmingly large percentage of illegal immigrants do not have conscious or unconscious ill intent in their hearts if we set aside that they have decided to thumb their noses at the legal processes set forth for legally entering the USA.
The alleged killer of Jeffrey Monroe and Edwin Jackson is Manuel Orrego-Savala, an illegal alien (‘immigrant’, ‘undocumented immigrant’) from Guatemala who, according to my reading, has been deported from USA not once but on two separate occasions.
Allow me a sidebar by offering CNN an alternative to their referring to Mr. Orrego-Savala as an “immigrant” in their recent article about this tragedy and later in same article referring to this alleged assailant as an “undocumented immigrant”.
Both of CNN’s references are accurate but that does not mean that referring to Mr. Orrego-Savala as an illegal alien is any less accurate.
Immigrant: a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country.
Undocumented: not having the appropriate legal document or license.
Alien: belonging to a foreign country or nation.
Illegal: contrary to or forbidden by law, especially by criminal law.
I’ve constructed a Venn diagram depicting what I believe to be at least three conditions that must have been met in order for Mr. Orrego-Savala to allegedly kill Mr. Monroe and Mr. Jackson.
Mr. Orrego-Savala, a Guatemalan national was present in the USA without appropriate legal documents and, therefore, contrary the laws of this country. Mr. Orrego-Savala, our elected officials and all US citizens must own this condition.
Mr. Orrego-Savala, a Guatemalan national was present in the USA without appropriate legal documents, consumed alcohol beyond the level prescribed by law for driving an automobile. Mr. Orrego-Savala alone owns this decision.
Mr. Orrego-Savala, a Guatemalan national was present in the USA without appropriate legal documents decided to drive despite having his driving license revoked and having consumed alcohol beyond the level prescribed by law for driving an automobile. Mr. Orrego-Savala alone owns this decision.
Our elected officials and all US citizens owe an unqualified apology to Mr. Monroe’s and Mr. Kennedy’s families and friends. It would serve all were our elected officials pushed by citizens to update our immigration laws and then ruthlessly enforce those laws.
Mr. Orrego-Savala must own his decisions and be held to account for the consequences of his decisions.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Monroe and Jackson family and friends over the needless loss of their loved ones, Jeffrey and Edwin.
